What is a Medical Forensic Exam?

A medical forensic exam is a non-invasive, comprehensive medical exam conducted by our medical service providers, who has specialized training to provide medical care and treatment for survivors of sexual and physical assault/abuse. Medical care and treatment are the focus of a medical forensic exam. Our providers will obtain a thorough medical history, conduct a head-to-toe physical examination, and assess for injuries and infections. We can test for some sexually transmitted diseases onsite and refer to specialists for more advanced care. The exams can reassure patients that their bodies are healthy and provide age-appropriate body safety education. The secondary purpose of a medical forensic exam is to collect physical evidence for use in criminal proceedings. Under Indiana law, medical forensic exams and accompanying tests are free for patients.

When you arrive

Feel free to park along 5th Street in front of the building or in the parking lot on the mural side of the building. You will enter the building at the front, along 5th Street, through door 1.

When you ring the bell, our staff will greet you and your child and show you to the clinic waiting room to explain the exam process.

After obtaining written consent from you and verbal consent from your child (as applicable), the physical exam will take place in the exam room. A step-by-step explanation will be provided throughout the exam, and you may be present at your child’s side, as per your child’s wishes.

The exam is external and not invasive for young children and most adolescents. A special camera will be used for photo documentation, if you and your child are comfortable with this. You and your child will be offered the opportunity to ask questions and discuss any concerns related to the examination and findings.

SWICACC medical staff will set any necessary follow-up appointments and make referrals as indicated. You will also have the option to coordinate with an advocate, if requested. Before you leave, you will be provided with verbal and written discharge instructions.
